Women driving digital change at DWP Digital

Women driving digital change at DWP Digital

Across DWP Digital, women are building careers that combine technology, innovation and real social impact.

The short videos spotlight women working across software engineering, data, delivery, cloud services and digital transformation, offering a behind-the-scenes look at the people helping shape some of the UK government’s most important digital services. From career journeys and day-to-day roles to advice for others considering tech careers, the series highlights the diversity of experiences within DWP Digital.

For many of the women featured, the route into technology was anything but traditional. Some joined through apprenticeships and early careers programmes, while others transitioned from completely different industries after discovering a passion for problem-solving and digital innovation.

Senior front-end developer Fey Ijaware describes her own path into tech as “a happy accident”. After being introduced to a website project early in her career, she began teaching herself to code before eventually moving into software development full time. Today, alongside her work at DWP Digital, she also supports women and non-binary people through coding communities and mentoring initiatives.

The videos also showcase the scale and purpose behind the work. DWP Digital teams build and maintain services used by millions of people across the UK, supporting everything from benefit applications to pension services and job support. Employees work across engineering, cloud infrastructure, cybersecurity, user research and product development, often collaborating in agile, multidisciplinary teams.

Representation and visibility remain an important part of encouraging more women into technology careers. By sharing honest conversations about career growth, learning new skills and overcoming challenges, the Shorts series helps demonstrate that there is no single path into tech — and that careers in digital are open to people from a wide range of backgrounds and experiences.

At its heart, the campaign reflects DWP Digital’s wider focus on people, purpose and progress: using technology to improve services while creating an environment where women in digital can thrive, develop and lead.
