Companies House

We're more than just a government agency

We’re a thriving community of professionals dedicated to driving innovation, fostering diversity, and making a meaningful impact to the UK economy, and the lives of the people who live and work here.

Whether you’re an experienced professional or just starting your career journey, our dynamic and inclusive workplace could be the place for you.

Driving confidence in the UK economy

At Companies House we drive confidence in the economy and make the UK a great place to start and run a business. We do this by registering company information and making it publicly and freely available. The data on our register helps to inform millions of business decisions annually.

If a business wants to operate as a limited company and benefit from limited liability, it needs to register with us. In exchange, they must comply with standards, transparency and accountability. This gives confidence to businesses, investors, society, consumers and the UK economy as a whole.

There are more than 5 million limited companies registered in the UK, and last year over 600,000 new companies were incorporated with us.

The Civil Service Code

Our main responsibilities

  • Incorporate and dissolve limited companies
  • Examine and register the information that all UK companies are legally required to supply
  • Make all that information available to the public via the official government register of UK companies

We’re an executive agency of the UK government’s Department for Business and Trade.

That means we’re a non-ministerial department responsible for the incorporation and dissolution of limited companies in the UK. We have over 2,000 employees based in 3 offices – Cardiff, Edinburgh and Belfast.

Our aim is to be the best registry in the world achieved through brilliant people working on brilliant systems delivering brilliant services.

We’re currently delivering an organisation-wide transformation programme focussing on a complete redesign of our digital services, target operating model and culture.

We’re also on the cusp of new legislation that will introduce the biggest changes to Companies House since 1844, including important changes to UK company law. The Economic Crime and Corporate Transparency Act will give us more powers to tackle economic crime and improve
the data on our registers.

These changes will need different skills, capabilities and mindset where adaptable, bold and curious behaviours are the norm and empowerment is encouraged and utilised.
