When you have 200,000 employees and 40 million clients across the globe, it’s hard to offer the same thing as everyone else. Because in our world, you’ll build a path like no-one else – one that can take you in many different directions.
You can be different too, and discover how it’s your key to making an impact. It’s what makes our people, our connections and our work more meaningful. Here, everyone belongs. Whatever your story, whatever walk of life you’re from, it’s what you’ve got and where you’re going we’re interested in. Your qualities, not your qualifications.
We’re 50 nationalities speaking 144 languages. Which is more than exciting, it’s essential to who we are. It’s crucial to the opportunities and network you’ll create. When you think about the sort of business you want to be a part of, it should be where our junior talent intakes have a 50/50 gender split. With a leadership team that’s over 34% women and rising all the time. That says a lot about where we’re heading and how we’ll grow together.
You’ll feel at home with like-minded colleagues but also challenged and developed by new perspectives. From global hackathons to active involvement in employee resource groups, you have opportunities to build things here that go way beyond typical early talent programmes. Whatever you want, whoever you are, the combinations of your potential are limitless. We care about your skills, not what you studied. We’ll support you to start your career in an area where you’ll thrive. And, our structured development programmes, mentor and buddy schemes, and
more will help you grow the kind of in-demand, agile skills that can take your long-term career to places you may have never dreamed of.
You’ll shape your path. You’ll be strengthened by the support around you. And whether you’re an investment banker, relationship manager or engineer, you’ll enjoy all the success and benefits that come with being part of something bigger.
In the UK, we have around 34,700 people working across all our major business areas, including retail, private, commercial and investment banking, as well as jobs in operational and support functions (such as compliance, legal, finance, human resources, risk, and technology).
We also serve our customers through an extensive network of branches and call centres. Whether you are looking for a first job or taking the next step in your career, we offer many ways for you to realise your potential.
We want everyone to be at their best, so we promote flexibility, collaboration, learning and wellbeing. We encourage curiosity and creativity, to seek out better ways to solve problems and make a positive impact on our customers’ experience. There are many benefits, including improved wellbeing for employees, a more inclusive work environment and a reduction in our carbon footprint.
We’ve embraced hybrid working across our teams, providing flexibility around where, when, and how work gets done. And, as an HSBC employee in the UK, you will have access to tailored professional development opportunities and a competitive pay and benefits package. This includes private healthcare for all UK-based employees, enhanced maternity, parental, adoption, and surrogacy pay and support when you return to work, and a contributory pension scheme.
We give our people the option to train, upskill and obtain qualifications in a way that’s right for them. We offer on-site HSBC University training in the UK, online courses, and opportunities outside the classroom through volunteering. We’re working to ensure everyone has the skills needed for the jobs of today and tomorrow.
At HSBC, our purpose is opening up a world of opportunity. That means celebrating our differences and building a culture where everyone feels included, valued, and respected.
We value difference and we’re founded on the strength of different people, experiences, and voices. We are committed to removing barriers and ensuring careers at HSBC are inclusive and accessible.
Our employee networks support our commitment to inclusion, helping make HSBC a place where people feel they can be themselves. In the UK we have 18 Employee Resource Groups with membership currently standing at more than 8,500 colleagues.
At HSBC our purpose is opening up a world of opportunity. That means celebrating our differences and building a culture where everyone feels included, valued and respected.*
We believe everyone should have the freedom to be themselves at work and we encourage colleagues to be active allies and to speak up if they have concerns.
We work with our global employee networks to create an environment where everyone feels included and supported.
We provide employees with training on allyship and unconscious bias. We encourage our colleagues to:
Our employees lead eight global networks to support building an inclusive culture across the bank. The conversations they have inform the actions we take as an organisation and help us to create an environment in which all colleagues can thrive.*
The employee networks are part of our DNA. The first was founded in London in 1975 (‘Christians in HSBC’) and we now have more than 150 groups all around the world.
We deliver better outcomes for our colleagues and customers by having a culture anchored in diverse thinking and inclusion.
To help us continue to build an inclusive culture we take action in four key areas:
Technology at HSBC is powered by our people. It is the place for inquisitive, innovative and creative technologists to build and grow your career. We offer an entrepreneurial workplace culture with technology at its core, so our team can collaborate across borders to create and deploy innovations rapidly and at scale.
You’ll get to work in a flexible and inclusive working environment where everyone is respected and valued. As the world’s leading international bank, our global scale creates opportunity. You’ll get the support and resources you need to develop your skills for your personal development, mobility, and progression.
Engineering Lead
There is a strong sense of community among women in tech at HSBC and we build each other up.
For example, one of my teammates, Sophia, started a Women Forum in the Guangzhou office to connect female engineers. It received a lot of enthusiasm and has expanded to other global locations across the bank with the support of senior management. I’ve joined some of the sessions to share my experience and tips for career growth.
Returning to the workforce was daunting. I worried that the long gap on my CV would put off employers, but I was able to secure some interviews and was offered a role at HSBC Life, our insurance business. The bank gave me a chance and I’m grateful.
It took a few months to get back up to speed. Technology had evolved massively. I had to quickly learn new project-management tools and new concepts like agile working. Even the language of the workplace had changed. But my colleagues rallied round whenever I got stuck. Click to hide information about image Gunjan with her husband and daughter, aged seven months
Before long, I was given the opportunity to support some key, high-profile initiatives, which was exciting.
