How to get started in IT Security

IT or Cyber Security is the information technology processes and practices that protect computers, networks, data and programmes from cyber-attacks and unauthorised access. IT Security plays a crucial role within the government, finance companies, military, hospitals and most private business who store a large amount of data in their computer systems.

There are a number of different areas within the IT Security sector. These include:

  • Systems administration
  • Firewall administration
  • Network troubleshooting
  • Ethical hacking
  • Security analyst
  • Penetration testing

If you are looking to get started in IT Security, you will need to have most of the following skillset:

  • Logical skills
  • Analytical skills
  • Up to date knowledge on developments in Cyber Security
  • Understanding of applicable UK law and regulations to IT Security
  • Understanding database, networking and systems
  • An IT Security or computer science related degree or certification
  • A strong background in IT

As well as having the right experience and skills for IT Security, there are a number of qualifications that can be extremely beneficial within the sector. Below are just a few of the certifications available for those wanting to get starting in IT Security:

  • SANS Institute- GIAC
  • CISA
  • CISSP
  • EC Council- Ethical Hacker

Depending on your skills and experience, you can expect to earn from around £30,000 and up to £75,000+ in a role in IT Security. Salaries also depend on location and whether you are contract or permanent.
