Delivering mission success

Dstl - Mission success

As defence and security shifts from the battlefield into cyberspace, Dstl is now growing its cyber capabilities to ensure that the UK is at the forefront of dealing with global cyber threats.

We are looking for creative individuals to join our collaborative and supportive technical community.

Working alongside world-class scientists, engineers and technical specialists, you’ll help solve complex challenges, advance cutting-edge research and develop innovative technologies with leading industry and academic partners. Your work will have a direct impact on national security and help protect the UK, making a real difference where it matters most.

The military and civilian worlds are entirely dependent on electronic systems and data. This affects everything from our phones and laptops through to our military vehicles, power distribution, communications systems, and other ‘invisible’ systems. We take these technologies as components, programs, or entire interconnected systems. We break them down and understand how they are vulnerable to attack. Knowing how they can be broken is critical to building the right protection and understanding the military impact if the system is attacked. Our expertise ranges from hardware and antennas through to large, complex software.

Dstl’s cyber capability protects UK Defence and Security from threats to our systems, networks and military platforms.
Some of our most exciting challenges can’t be shared publicly, but they could become part of your everyday work.

Bringing the right mindset

To thrive here, you’ll need a systematic, logical, creative and curious mind. After all, you’ll be surrounded by people who have a natural desire to understand how and why systems function, how they break and how to make them stronger.

A clear passion for science, engineering and technology is important too, as is the desire to ensure the UK Armed Forces have the best information, security and equipment possible.

Our teams are a fantastic mix of technical backgrounds, and range from highly experienced staff to our apprentices, students and graduates. They all share an appetite for complex problem solving and using their skills to make a difference in a really supportive environment.

Skill variety

In our teams you’ll find everyone from mathematicians, physicists and engineers to systems thinkers and psychologists. Regardless of background, we all have a passion for learning and focus on developing skills across both technical and professional leadership. We support many staff through Chartership accreditation and higher education study.

Finding the right balance

While the majority of our work is office-based, we have a strong flexible-working culture around how you manage your day.
We have a strong education outreach programme with teams supporting local education to grow STEM skills for the future and act as role models. It’s really important for us to role model women in STEM through virtual work experience, guest talks and designing technical challenges.

We recognise that great cyber specialists come from a wide range of backgrounds, and we’re committed to creating an environment where everyone can thrive and contribute their best work.
